Penguin Books 
Penguin paperbacks were the brainchild of Allen Lane, then a director of The Bodley Head. After a weekend visiting Agatha Christie in Devon, he found himself on a platform at Exeter station searching its bookstall for something to read on his journey back to London, but discovered only popular magazines and reprints of Victorian novels.
Appalled by the selection on offer, Lane decided that good quality contemporary fiction should be made available at an attractive price and sold not just in traditional bookshops, but also in railway stations, tobacconists and chain stores.
He also wanted a ‘dignified but flippant’ symbol for his new business. His secretary suggested a Penguin and another employee was sent to London Zoo to make some sketches. Seventy years later Penguin is still one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

Rowohlt
Today a group of publishing houses meets under the roof of rowohlt in Reinbek with Hamburg. The book publishing house, which embodies the requirement of its founder with its profile, forms the core: well readable literature on high level. In the Hardcover segment 1984 the Imprint Wunderlich, 1990 rowohlt BERLIN publishing house and 2004 the Imprint Kindler came in addition.
The second central column of the enterprise forms rororo: the Rowohlt paperback publishing house. In the initial phase was valid for the Federal Republic of Germany “rororo” as synonym for paperbacks absolutely. As the oldest German paperback publishing house it has one the most extensive and most interesting Backlists under all German public publishing houses. In order to arrange this variety more visible, an abundance of new rows developed with the time (particularly within the special book range). Since 1972 were established rotfuchs with its program of fastidious child and youth books as independent Submarke.
Since 1982 rowohlt publishing houses belong to the group of publishing houses George von Holtzbrinck. In the year 1992 Heinrich Maria single Rowohlt foundation was called in the life.
